Why adult imposed consequences don’t work with kids (So, what does?) http://www.helpmesara.com/2019/03/why-adult-imposed-consequences-dont-work-with-kids/ http://www.helpmesara.com/2019/03/why-adult-imposed-consequences-dont-work-with-kids/#respond Tue, 26 Mar 2019 10:00:09 +0000 http://www.helpmesara.com/?p=5289 Download Why adult imposed consequences don’t work with kids (So, what does?)

I have always been a fan of Dr. Ross Greene‘s work. I have read his books and attended several of his workshops and lectures. Most recently, I participated in a two day conference, led by him, in Toronto. I was inspired and grateful to learn more about his collaborative approach to working with kids of all ages, and honoured that he agreed to join me as a guest on this podcast, in order to impart some of his wisdom to you, too.

Over the course of this episode, you will learn more about:

  • The choices parents have when they’re faced with needing to deal with a situation related to their child’s “difficult” behaviour.
  • Whether punishments such as suspension from school or time out at home solves the problem and if not, why not.
  • Whether natural and logical consequences unilaterally imposed on children who do not “follow through,” solves the problem and if not, why not.
  • How to implement Dr. Ross Greene’s Collaborative & Proactive Solutions model, including:
    • Effective ways to understand the problem and invite collaboration from a child
    • How to move from looking through the lens of seeing the child as having a problem behaviour, and instead identify the problem as one related to lagging skills and unmet expectations
    • The crucial steps that a parent or teacher, for example, would need to take in order to understand why the child is “stuck” and how to solve the problem
    • The age or developmental stage at which a child can be included or involved in this process, and whether there are any children who may not be able to participate
    • what to say and do when a child says “I don’t know” when trying to engage them in helping you understand the problem
  • How the CPS Model can change the lives of parents, teachers and caregivers so that neither punishment nor consequence needs to be imposed again
  • Resources that can help you learn even more

Janyce Lastman and I have previously collaborated on several podcasts. So when she approached me about this one I was glad because, with recent news headlines related to happenings in a well private school in Toronto, this is more timely of a topic than ever.

Janyce offered to help parents explain, contextualize and cope with incidents such as those in the news and to help parents learn how to reduce the chances that their children will be subject to extreme bullying, hazing and abuse in school going forward. In addition, I asked her to lend her expertise in regards to exploring different kinds of schools, how the culture of each is determined and by whom.

Over the course of this episode, you will learn more about:

  • How to tell the difference between a “good” versus not as “good” school
  • Whether private always means better
  • The difference in culture from one school to the next
  • Who or what determines this culture
  • Whether or not there is a difference in the culture between same sex or even same religion schools versus more heterogeneous schools
  • Bullying/hazing at schools and whether this is more common in certain schools/programs than others
  • How parents can help to explain bad incidents at school to their kids and how they can cope

In addition to listening and learning from this podcast, Janyce offers the following links to great resources:

Are our lives going to pot? http://www.helpmesara.com/2018/10/are-our-lives-going-to-pot/ http://www.helpmesara.com/2018/10/are-our-lives-going-to-pot/#respond Wed, 17 Oct 2018 10:00:32 +0000 http://www.helpmesara.com/?p=5169 Download Are our lives going to pot?

Now that marijuana has being legalized in Canada, what changes, other than the obvious, will this bring about? How can we make sure that we are as knowledgeable about the impact of weed on our bodies and our brains as possible, and how are we going to ensure that our beliefs and behaviours are modelling the responsible use of drugs, so that our children do not get the message that just because something is legal, that its safe. I invited Psychologist, Dr. Jonathan Stea, to join me to discuss this important topic.

Over the course of this episode, you will learn more about:

  • The physiological and psychological impact of using marijuana, in particular, on us
  • Whether marijuana is addictive or not and whether it impacts our ability to make good, safe decisions
  • Whether different forms of marijuana affects us differently
  • Whether marijuana that is dispensed through legally approved centres are safer and what might happen to the black market
  • Whether the legalization of recreational marijuana will encourage children under the age of 19 to use (for the first time or more than they already do)
  • Whether parents using or growing at home will normalize its use or make children less inclined and how parents can discuss marijuana with their children
